Cosplayer Spotlight: Shappi Workshop

Her real name is Aleksandra and from 2009 she gain a lot of awards for her amazing work. Her facebook profile is really worth seeing - you can not only see her outstanding photos, but also learn how to make gems or armor. 

Shappi always has time to share her experience with begginer cosplayers and she is well-known not only in Poland. She takes part in foreign events, where she's hosting cosplay classes and lectures. 

Anuszka: How did you come across cosplay? What was your first impression? 

Shappi: At first i participated in manga and anime conventions. I had a passion for comics, but one day i visit cosplay show and i just fall in love with it! Girls dressed in wonderfull dresses were like from completly different world to me and i really wanted to try my hand at this. And i ended up here!  

A: How did your loved ones react on your new pasion? 

S: At the beggining they were quite unwilling toward my dressing up but with the passing of time they saw that cosplay is a really developing hobby. Now all of them are very supportive in everything what im doing. I love to show them my work. 

A: What is the most problematic thing in making costumes for you? 

S: I think that sewing. Im definitely craftsman-type - im working in garage, with EVA foam and sculpting, making armors. Sitting behind the sewing machine comes uneasily to me but im still practising 

A: Which of your costumes is your favourite one? 

S: Brunhilda from Zangeki no Reginliev game.

 I prepare this one for European Cosplay Gathering Finals 2013 in Paris. It was so far my greatest challenge. I made resin jewelry, work on wood, worbla and metal - all by myself. It was totally worth it. Thanks to this creation i got first place in ECG finals and it was so much fun to wear it. 

A: Have you got any advice for begginer cosplayers? 

S: First of all you need to pick right character - i recommend you something simple (its not a good idea to make some huge project without preparation, try to make simple costumes and learn how to paint or sew on them) but also character that you like! It will give you a lot of fun  And don't worry if you wouldn't  be perfect at your first attempt - we all started from the same point as you and we still make a lot of mistakes, which are the best way to improve your skills!

Cosplayer Spotlight: Nikita Cosplay: " it’s not only about copying but also about creating"

Today we move on to France, where one of my favourite cosplayer - Nikita Cosplay is making her career. She is really talented and charming person and it will be an honor to meet her in person one day (i hope so). She was so kind that she agreed to answer my questions.

Nikita has got a lot of costumes on her account - i admire her work a lot, especially Disney creations, which always takes me to my childhood years. 

Lets see what she is saying about her amazing work and passion.

Anuszka: What is cosplay for you? How did your career start? 

Nikita: Cosplay is my hobby, my time eater, my money deficit, my bests moments in my life . I started Cosplay in 2006 but my “career” really started in 2008 when Sikay and I won the WCS French selections.

A: What is the most problematic thing in making costumes for you? And which part of your work is your favourite one? 

N: The most problematic thing is the money . No, seriously, my main problem is to make my costumes as accurate as possible but still with my personal touch. I want people to like my cosplays as much as they like the character but I also want to bring my own imagination on it. I have huge debates with myself in my head on how I should make each piece of costume.

A: Which of your costumes is your favourite one? And which one was the hardest to make? 

N: I love making Disney Princesses because they are a huge part of my childhood (and Disney is my favourite fandom). Also, princesses costumes can be made in so many different ways so it’s not only about copying but also about creating. 
I think I have a few “very difficult costumes” in my wardrobe. Asuka’s Plugsuit, Marudashi’s Kimono, Nix’s and Wonder Woman’s armours, Anna’s winter outfit… They are all very different from each others but represent a huge challenge.

A: What can you tell me about cosplay in France? Is it popular? Or not? 

N: You have to know that France is the most important manga buyer after Japan. So It was one of the first country to develop cosplay. It’s popular, yes, of course not in all the parts of French society but Cosplay is still a huge community in France. We host the most important European convention: Japan Expo with its 200000+ visitors. 

Anastasia - Anastasia

A: What is your cosplay dream? Any contest or award? 

N: My cosplay dream is Yuna is her special dressphere: Floral Fallal. But I can’t fly so… I’m not sure if I got the second part of your question right: I don’t dream anymore about contests or awards. I’ve been selected for the WCS twice and ECG once. I won a lot of contests including some with amazing prices. So, I am totally satisfied with what I won.

A: Who is your favourite cosplayer? Why do you admire him or her? 

N: It’s a difficult question; I admire a lot of talented cosplayers. One of my favourite is Yaya Han, because she is super talented, makes a lot of great costumes and managed to make an honest business with her work.

A: Do you know any cosplayer from Poland? Maybemyou want to visit us one day? 

N: I know and admire Shappi! She is a master cosplayer! I would love to come and visit you! Money is the problem again XD

Asuka Soryu Langley - Evangelion

A: How do you spend your free time when you are not working on the new cosplay? Have you got any other passion? 

N: I spend my free time with my boyfriend, family and friends! I love cooking and baking (people say that I’m good at pastries). I love video games but I have no time to play now… I watch my boyfriend playing while working on my costumes!

A: Due to this year San Diego Comic Con incident, have you ever experienced some inappropriate behaviour in relation to you or your cosplay friends?

N: Hmmm I don’t think so. I had a few weird stalkers on my page but never in a convention. I know some of my friends had some bad experiences though… But don’t know the details about it.

A: What do you think about making money on cosplay? Are you planning to do it for living?

N: I think it’s a good way to transform a hobby into a work. Some musicians/comedians/artists go from hobbyist to pro without any problem, so why not cosplayers? I am not planning to do it for a living; I have a job that I love: I am a costume designer for kids. I can’t dream of any better professional life.

Hi there, my name is Anna (Anuszka Cosplay) and im a novice cosplayer from Poland. Welcome :)

I run this blog since April 2014. It is my way of showing love for cosplay and amazing people from this community. Cosplay for me is much more than hobby and so is for my upcoming guest :)
Today i would like to present you my favourite male cosplayer - Leon Chiro from Italy.
I just fell in love with his Prince of Persia costume and when i saw his other cosplays... aahhh... he is totally awensome!

I still can't belive that i was able to talk to him! And its all beacause of Zel COShorse and at this point i want to thank him for his support and invaluable help. He is one of our representatives on this year Euro Cosplay Finals, and you should definitely check out his fanpage - HERE. Zel, you just made my wish come true :)

But, let's go back to Italy :)

Leon is an amazing guy, full of passion, determination and sense of humor ;) I really admire his work and it was pure pleasure for me to make this interview. Enjoy :)

Anuszka: How did your adventure with cosplay start?

Leon Chiro: My Cosplay Adventure started in 2011, I was working in a model agency and I wanted to do a special photoshooting dedicated to the Videogames World. A friend of mine told me about the 'Cosplay World' and I started to be very interested about it. When I saw for the first time what was the Cosplay World about, I just felt in love and that passion grew up everyday. My first Cosplay has been Tidus from Final Fantasy X.

A: How do you reconcile cosplay with your private life?

L.C: It's very hard to reconcile it, especially because this period I am invited as special guest in a lot of Italian and European Conventions. It means that I cannot have a 'fix' job because I need to be flexible especially because I am full time STUDENT in sports Science and Physioteraphy. I am trying to manage in the best way I can all my time, sometimes I really don't know how I am finding all the time to finish my things. 

A: Which of your costumes is your favorite one? Why? Is there any of your costumes you aren’t satisfied with? 

L.C: My favorite Cosplay is Caius Ballad. This decision is for the effort, time, passion and heart I put in that Cosplay. 
In the same time Caius represents the part of my Cosplay 'Career' that is giving me less satisfactions because of the 'success' this Cosplay had. I am often doing competitions and Caius was the one giving me less victories in comparison to other Cosplays I brought on the stage. I am still surprised about the relative concept that the Cosplay Success can have today, I mean that sometimes a very easy cosplay can have way more success than a very big \ crafted \ complicated one. :) True story. Sometimes it depends on the intepretation.

A: You have won a lot of awards, which one is the most important for you? 

L.C: Yes I have! As I said, I am used to compete a lot in the cosplay contests. 
I don't think I have 'a most important one' but all the times I won in Lucca Comics and Games (Italy's most important Con) and the victory in Japan Expo 2013 on the Classic Cosplay Contest as Best Forge Cosplay with my DMC3 Dante. 
Of course other big satisfactions come from the Videogames companies as Capcom, 2K, Ubisoft etc for having shared my Cosplays on their official pages.

A: Is there anything you still want to achieve in cosplay? Some other award? Maybe to participate in some special event?

L.C: My dream has 3 letters : ECG. I would love to represent my country to the ECG finals in Japan Expo and I will try hard untill I will do it!!! 
My determination is very very high, and I always try my best to succeed in all my goals! :) 
Eurocosplay and WCS are also very important for me, hope to succeed one day to these personal achievements.

A: Have you got any role model in cosplay? Any artist you really admire? 

L.C: Actually I don't have role models but there are some cosplayers that I particulary admire a lot. 
Starting from my best friend Philippe Lauby Cosplay, to my dear friends Elffi, Liui Aquino, Shinrajunkie.
Those guys will never stop to surprise me, I love them! :) 

A: What is the most problematic thing in making costumes for you? Which part of your work do you like the most? 

L.C: My problematic part is the tailoring part for the complicated parts. I am really trying to do my best to improve but my specialities are the prop making in armours, accessories and weapons! I am always doing them by myself! :) 

A: Is cosplay popular in Italy? What is the most prestigious cosplay event there? And what is your favorite one? 

L.C: Cosplay is A LOT popular in Italy and the competition is VERY HIGH, maybe the highest I saw in Europe. The spirit is not the best one I saw because people sometimes is too much focused on winning the cosplay contests and they forget about the real Cosplay essence: having fun. :) 
My favorite italian Convention is Lucca Comics and Games and it's also the biggest one! 
A lot of cosplayers from Europe are coming for this event because it really deserves to be visited!!!

A: Have you ever been to Poland? Maybe you have plans to visit our country? Do you know any cosplayers from here? 

L.C: I would LOVE to go in Poland!!! :) Last year I met Zel COShorse, a very nice and gentle guy, he was the ECG reprentant of team Poland and I enjoyed so much to meet him and stay in contact! :) Cosplayers in Poland are very gentle and humble, I appreciate it a lot and I hope to go in a Cosplay Convention over there! 

A: Have you got any advice for novice cosplayers? 

L.C: Like I said before, do everything with your heart. If you really love a character, do it from your heart, and don’t care about the critics. Don’t do it because you like it – do it because you love it.

Umieściłam go na pierwszym miejscu mojej listy najlepszych męskich cosplayerów... po prostu zakochałam się w jego stroju Księcia Persji i w dniu kiedy zamieściłam tamten post, nawet przez myśl mi nie przeszło, że będę mogła z nim porozmawiać! 
Wszystko dzięki Zelowi (wywiad z nim znajdziecie tutaj: KLIK, pojawił się też na 6. miejscu mojego zestawienia), który skontaktował mnie z Leonem i umożliwił powstanie tego posta. Gdybym miała stworzyć listę najsympatyczniejszych cosplayerów w Polsce, Zel zająłby pierwsze trzy pozycje! 

No ale wróćmy do Włoch ;) 

Leon to niesamowity facet, pełen pasji, zacięcia i poczucia humoru. Rozmowa z nim była dla mnie czystą przyjemnością i myślę, że najwyższy czas abym oddała mu głos. Zapraszam!

Anuszka: Jak rozpoczęła się Twoja przygoda z cosplayem?

Leon Chiro: Moja przygoda z cosplayem rozpoczęła się w 2011 roku. Pracowałem w agencji modelingowej i postanowiłem zrobić specjalną sesję dla Videogames World. Mój przyjaciel opowiedział mi, co to jest "Cosplay World" i zainteresowałem się tym. Kiedy po raz pierwszy zobaczyłem, na czym to tak naprawdę polega, po prostu zakochałem się i z dnia na dzień moja pasja była coraz silniejsza. Moim pierwszym strojem był Tidus z Final Fantasy X.

A: W jaki sposób godzisz życie prywatne z cosplayem?

L.C: Te dwie rzeczy bardzo trudno mi pogodzić, szczególnie w tym okresie - właśnie teraz jestem zapraszany na różne konwenty we Włoszech i Europie. Nie mogę być zatrudniony na etacie, bo muszę być bardzo elastyczny, a do tego studiuję dziennie wychowanie fizyczne i fizjoterapię. Staram się, jak najlepiej zorganizować swój czas i czasami naprawdę nie mam pojęcia, jak mi się to udaje.

A: Który z Twoich kostiumów jest Twoim ulubionym? Dlaczego? Czy jest jakiś strój, z którgo nie byłeś zadowolony?

L.C: Moim ulubionym wcieleniem jest Caius Ballad, głównie ze względu na ilość wysiłku, czasu, pasji i serca, jakie włożyłem w ten strój. Jednocześnie Caius reprezentuje tą część mojej "kariery", z której nie jestem szczególnie zadowolony. Wszystko ze względu na "sukces", jaki ten strój odniósł. Bardzo często biorę udział w różnych konkursach i ten cosplay przyniósł mi zdecydowanie mniej zwycięstw, niż inne moje sceniczne kreacje. Nadal zaskakuje mnie, jak nieprzewidywalne jest to, czy dany cosplay odniesie sukces, czy nie. Mam na myśli to, że czasem bardzo prosty strój wzbudza większy podziw niż ten bardzo duży, pracochłonny czy skomplikowany. Serio! Czasami to zależy od interpretacji.

 A: Masz na swoim koncie wiele nagród, która z nich jest dla Ciebie najważniejsza?

L.C: Rzeczywiście, jest ich sporo. Jak już mówiłem biorę udział w wielu konkursach cosplayowych. Nie mam chyba swojego ulubionego zwycięstwa... wygrywałem podczas Lucca Comics and Games (najważniejszy włoski konwent) no i odniosłem spory sukces podczas Japan Expo 2013, jako Dante z DMC. Oczywiście wielkim wyróżnieniem jest dla mnie udostępnianie na facebooku moich zdjęć przez firmy tworzące gry, jak Capcom, 2K, Ubisoft, itd.

 A: Czy jest coś, co nadal chciałbyś osiągnąć w cosplayu? Jakaś nagroda, albo uczestnictwo w szczególnym wydarzeniu?

L.C: Moje marzenie to trzy litery: ECG.

Bardzo pragnę reprezentować mój kraj na finałach podczas Japan Expo i będę próbować dopóki tego nie osiągnę. Jestem bardzo zdeterminowany i zawsze staram się najlepiej, jak mogę, żeby zrealizować postawione sobie cele. Eurocosplay oraz WCS są dla mnie również bardzo istotne i mam nadzieję, że kiedyś osiągnę w nich sukces.

A: Czy masz, jakiś wzór do naśladowania pośród cosplayerów? Czy masz artystę, którego szczególnie podziwiasz?

L.C: Szczerze mówiąc nie mam żadnego cosplayowego idola, ale jest wiele osób, które bardzo podziwiam. Między innymi mój przyjaciel PhilippeLauby Cosplay oraz Elffie, Liui Aquino i Shinrajunkie - oni nigdy nie przestają mnie zaskakiwać, uwielbiam ich! :)

A: Co jest dla Ciebie największym problemem podczas tworzenia strojów? Którą część swojej pracy lubisz najbardziej?

L.C: Największy kłopot sprawia mi szycie i krojenie skomplikowanych elementów. Bardzo się staram rozwijać moje umiejętności, ale i tak nalepiej czuję się w tworzeniu rekwizytów, broni, zbroi i dodatków. Zawsze robię je własnoręcznie.

A: Czy cosplay jest popularny we Włoszech? Jakie wydarzenie jest tam najbardziej prestiżowe? Które z nich jest Twoje ulubione?

L.C: Cosplay jest BARDZO popularny we Włoszech i poziom rywalizacji jest NIEZWYKLE wysoki, chyba najwyższy jaki widziałem w Europie. Z drugiej strony atmosfera nie jest u nas najlepsza, ponieważ dużo cosplayerów jest zbyt skupionych na wygrywaniu i zapominają o tym, co jest najważniejsze - zabawie.

Moim ulubionym włoskim konwentem jest Lucca Comics and Games, który jest jednocześnie tym największym. Wielu zagranicznych cosplayerów się na nim pojawia, ponieważ naprawdę warto tego doświadczyć.

A: Byłeś kiedyś w Polsce? Może planujesz nas odwiedzić? Znasz jakichś polskich cosplayerów?

L.C: Bardzo chciałbym odwiedzić Polskę! W zeszłym roku spotkałem Zela COShorse'a, fantastycznego członka reprezentacji Polski na ECG. Mile wspominam spędzony wspólnie czas i ciesze się, że nadal jesteśmy w kontakcie. Polscy artyści są niezwykle sympatyczni i skromni. Bardzo to w nich cenię i mam nadzieję, że wezmę kiedyś udział, w którymś z polskich konwentów.

A: Czy masz jakieś wskazówki dla początkujących cosplayerów? 

L.C: Jak już wcześniej mówiłem - róbcie to z sercem. Jeśli naprawdę kochacie postać, którą tworzycie, włóżcie w to całych siebie, nie patrząc na krytykę. Nie róbcie tego bo to lubicie, tylko dlatego, że to kochacie.

Tłumaczenie było robione przeze mnie, dlatego może być lekko kulawe ;) 

Tak, czy inaczej jeszcze raz bardzo dziękuję Leonowi za poświęcony mi czas, to było dla mnie niezwykłe przeżycie! Już odkładam pieniądze na Luccę :)
